Blue Funnel Plaque In Liverpool Chinatown

A plaque remembering the Chinese seamen who sailed on Alfred Holt's Blue Funnel line was put up outside the New Capital restaurant on Nelson street,Liverpool last week, November 18, 2013.

Liverpool's Chinatown is the oldest in Europe. There were around 20,000 Chinese seamen based in Liverpool at the beginning of WWII. Many lost their lives during the Atlantic and Pacific convoys.
After the war, over 15,000 Chinese seamen were forcefully repatriated back to China with some seamen leaving behind wives and children they would never see again.

Former Blue Funnel Line seamen attended the ceremony together with councillor Steve Munby and members of Liverpool Chinese community. The event was organised by The Soundagents who are carrying out an oral history project in Liverpool's Chinatown funded by the Lottery Heritage Fund.
